Townsville is now home to a new Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC), designed to operate in all natural and non-natural disaster events. Containing a back up power and water supply, the LDCC is able to be self-sufficient for several days. The $5.7 million facility houses the North Queensland Regional Data Centre and coordinates emergency responses for the city.

Replacing the previous coordination centre, which was only able to withstand a Category 3 cyclone, the new state-of-the-art LDCC is able to withstand a Category 5 cyclone. With 54 tonnes of reinforced steel and almost 650m³ of concrete, the LDCC is one of the toughest buildings in North Queensland and is able to withstand winds of over 300km per hour.

Not only does the facility meet the required cyclone classification, it sits outside of the tsunami zone and flood zones as well. The modern facility contains a number of advanced features, including major IT and communications upgrades to ensure that the information provided is as accurate and up-to-date as possible.
