UQ Gatton Campus 33kV Upgrade

545a9530

Project Overview

The University of Queensland’s Gatton Campus underwent an infrastructure upgrade to support continued campus development and increased renewable energy generation. Working alongside McNab, CV upgraded the campus electrical connection from 11kV to 33kV and established a new 33/11kV substation incorporating a 5/8 MVA transformer, 33kV switchgear and associated electrical infrastructure. The upgrade provided additional capacity for forecast electrical demand and renewable energy generation, supporting UQ Gatton’s longer-term vision of becoming an energy-neutral campus.

  • Client McNab
  • Location Gatton, QLD

Scope of Works

CV delivered an integrated package of design, civil construction, electrical installation, testing and commissioning services for the high-voltage infrastructure upgrade. The works facilitated the new 33kV connection and its integration with the campus’ existing 11kV private electrical network.

Key deliverables:

  • Civil, primary and secondary electrical design, including earthgrid, oil containment, HV layouts, earthing systems, lightning protection, protection, automation and site communications.
  • Supply and installation of a new 5/8 MVA 33/11kV oil-type transformer and three-panel 33kV MV switchboard.
  • Supply and installation of 11kV ring main units and new 11kV dry-type transformers.
  • Installation of approximately 1km of underground conduits and cable between the new connection point and substation switchgear.
  • Electrical demolition and enabling works, including 11kV HV cabling, telecommunications and low-voltage reticulation.
  • Civil works including earthgrid installation, drainage, cable trenches, conduits and pits, transformer slabs and bunding, fire walls and oil containment systems.
  • Primary and secondary electrical installation, including switching and metering plant, bus systems, cubicles, marshalling kiosks, cabling and fibre works.
  • Pre-commissioning and cutover of switching plant, HV plant, secondary systems and metering equipment.
  • Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing of secondary systems, including protection, control, communications and integration with HV plant.
  • Commissioning support, fault identification and rectification, test documentation and input into as-built documentation.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Increased electrical capacity – The upgrade from an 11kV to 33kV connection provided additional capacity to accommodate forecast growth in campus electrical demand.
  • Greater renewable energy capacity – The upgraded connection supported further renewable energy generation beyond the capacity of the previous 11kV connection.
  • Future-ready infrastructure – The new substation and associated electrical infrastructure provided capacity to support continued campus development and future buildings.
  • Integrated project delivery – CV brought together design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning capability to deliver the high-voltage infrastructure upgrade.
  • Supporting sustainability objectives – The infrastructure upgrade supported UQ Gatton’s longer-term vision of becoming an energy-neutral campus.

The CV Difference

CV combined specialist high-voltage expertise with integrated design and delivery capability to execute complex electrical infrastructure within an operational university environment. The project demonstrated CV’s capability to deliver reliable, future-ready infrastructure that supports evolving energy requirements and long-term client objectives.
