Port of Brisbane – Curlew St LCC Design & Construct

545a8145 Lr

Project Overview

Teys Australia, one of Australia’s largest beef processors and exporters to more than 60 countries, developed a new meat storage and distribution centre at the Port of Brisbane. To support the facility’s significant power requirements, CV delivered a turnkey Large Customer Connection (LCC) solution, including the design and construction of an Energex-compliant outdoor substation.

The substation was designed to provide 4.5MVA of power to the facility, enabling the HVAC systems to maintain the controlled warehouse temperature required for meat storage and export operations. Working closely with Energex, the Port of Brisbane and the project delivery team, CV successfully coordinated the connection of the new infrastructure to the Port’s electrical network while meeting critical programme milestones ahead of the Christmas period.

Scope of Works

CV delivered a complete design, construction, testing and commissioning package for the new outdoor substation and associated electrical infrastructure, ensuring reliable power supply to the facility’s critical operations.

Key deliverables:

  • Design and installation of an Energex outdoor substation with three 1.5MVA oil-filled transformers.
  • Installation of two ABB SafePlus Ring Main Units (RMUs) and one LV outdoor switchboard.
  • Civil and electrical design including earth grid systems, oil containment systems, HV layouts, lightning protection and insulation coordination.
  • Construction of transformer foundations, bunding systems, drainage infrastructure, cable trenching, conduits and pits.
  • Installation of switching, metering and associated high-voltage plant and equipment.
  • Completion of the substation Environmental Management Plan and Energex compliance requirements.
  • Site acceptance testing, commissioning support and integration with the wider Port electrical network.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Reliable Power Supply – Delivered a 4.5MVA substation capable of supporting critical refrigeration and HVAC systems required for temperature-controlled meat storage and processing operations.
  • Programme Certainty – Early identification of civil and electrical network gaps during the design phase enabled proactive resolution and kept the project on schedule.
  • Stakeholder Coordination – Successfully managed interfaces between Energex, the Port of Brisbane and the project team to achieve timely network connection and energisation.
  • First-Time Compliance – Achieved Energex civil works approval on the first inspection, allowing electrical equipment installation and commissioning to proceed without delay.
  • Operational Readiness – Delivered a fully commissioned substation prior to the peak Christmas export period, supporting uninterrupted facility operations.
